Tappin' These Trees

Today marked the second annual tapping of the maple trees here at our home. The kids were very willing and excited participants this year. Last year they were a little young and it was new to all of us but this year they knew what to expect and were excited. When we would drill the holes and the sap would begin to drip out they would yell " The tree is peeing!!" We tapped at 10 am and by 6 pm already had 10+ gallons of sap from the 10 trees we had tapped!

Our hearts filled with contentment to see the kids running between the trees to check on the sap levels. We have many maples in our yard and very nearby the the surrounding woods so we only have to walk a short distance from the house to collect the sap. We have a fire going outside to get the sap boiled down to "near syrup" then bring it in on the stove to finish up under watchful eye. Gotta start looking up some maple syrup recipes!!

Yum!! Maple syrup was like liquid gold around our house. My Mom always rationed it out. The other kids that came over never understood why we couldn't pour the syrup on our pancakes freely.

Alexis, that's exactly what I do, our friends' kids were over and I wouldn't let them pour their own syrup even though they are old enough, I didn't want them to waste a bunch!

Great photos, Jennifer. I remember my brother and I would fight to be the one who got to stand under the tap with our mouth open to drink the first sweet drips of sap. Great memories! Well, the tapping, not the fighting...

I love that your kids think the tree is peeing.
