Our Summer Vacation : Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park Part 1

For our summer family vacation this year we headed to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to explore the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park.  A friend has gone there every year for over 20 years and just kept telling us about it so we decided to check it out.  We booked a rustic cabin (no electricity, no running water, outhouse toilet) near Lake Superior on the northeastern border of the almost 60,000 acre state park, our friends Brook, Corey and their daughter, Lily joined us there.  We decided to head up via the lower peninsula of Michigan and stop at St. Ignace, just across the Mackinaw Bridge in the UP (Upper Peninsula).  We stopped before we crossed this bridge to visit the Old Mackinaw Lighthouse, as Brayden told us he would like to see 3 lighthouses on this trip.

View of the Mackinaw Bridge from inside the lighthouse.
Shuttle boat that takes people from the mainland to Mackinaw Island.
The first sunset at "our" beach on Lake Superior, just a short walk from our cabin's front door.
Brayden at the Lake of the Clouds overlook.
Lake of the Clouds and native blazing stars.

The "potholes" on Presque Isle River.
Kids enjoyed playing with the foam that gathered at the mouth of the Presque Isle.
The kids enjoying wading in the Big Iron River just below Bonanza Falls, just outside the north eastern edge of the park.
Brenna taking advantage of the backcountry campsite toilet while we were out on a hike.  :) That's going in the woods in style!!
